Ik heb er met volle teugen van genoten, me mee laten slepen door de uitgekiende manier waarop je op alle niveaus bespeeld wordt en je van een lach naar een traan wordt gevoerd en weer terug.<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood. De droomfabriek. Maar het duurt lang voordat de ideologische aap uit de mouw komt: pas helemaal aan het eind, bij het tweede compliment dat Melvin (Nicholson) Carol (Hunt) maakt, en waarmee hij haar definitief voor zich wint (het eerste, \u2018You make me want to be a better man\u2019 is sindsdien een gevestigde pick-up line geworden geloof ik).<\/p>\n<p>Melvin zegt dan:<\/p>\n<div class=\"citaat\">I might be the only person on the face of the earth that knows you\u2019re the greatest woman on earth. I might be the only one who appreciates () you say what you mean, and how you almost always mean something that\u2019s all about being straight and good. I think most people miss that about you, and I watch them, wondering how they can watch you bring their food and clear their tables and never get that they just met the greatest woman alive. And the fact that I get it makes me feel good\u2026 about me.<\/div>\n<p>Let op waar dit compliment op ingrijpt: Melvin spreekt Carol aan als serveerster, als de vrouw die eten brengt en tafels afruimt en door iedereen over het hoofd wordt gezien. Wie in haar werk onzichtbaar is, hoort hier dat ze w\u00e9l gezien wordt.<\/p>\n<p>Dat de film aan een oude chagrijn als Melvin nog hoop biedt, is tot daar aan toe: hij heeft vast zijn best gedaan en zijn oerschuld aan de kapitalistische samenleving afbetaald. Maar elke serveerster die naar deze film kijkt en zich aan Carol spiegelt, wordt voorgehouden dat er mensen zijn die zien wat de meesten niet zien: dat ze bijzonder is, zich opoffert, en dat ze zich door het ware, het goede en het nette laat leiden.<\/p>\n<p>Dat is de droom die de film verkoopt. Niet dat Carol haar omstandigheden verandert, maar dat iemand haar ziet binnen die omstandigheden. Die prins bestaat. Of hij langskomt, is een tweede, maar het kan, kijk maar naar Carol en Melvin.<\/p>\n<p>Wat hen overkomt is ogenschijnlijk meer dan \u2018as good as it gets\u2019. Maar wat verandert de droom aan Carols bestaan? Ze blijft serveerster, afhankelijk, en gevangen in dezelfde klassepositie. Haar werk blijft hetzelfde, haar financi\u00eble situatie verandert niet wezenlijk, haar structurele problemen verdwijnen niet, ze worden alleen romantisch gecompenseerd. De film houdt haar wereld klein en zegt: dit is genoeg.<\/p>\n<p>Maar met het idee dat je opofferingen gezien kunnen worden, met die droom, kun je dat ellendige bestaan lang volhouden. Het compliment verandert niets aan haar werk of haar loon, het maakt het alleen draaglijker. Voor wie zich met Carol identificeert, werkt die sc\u00e8ne als een bedwelmend middel: wie zich gezien voelt, komt niet in opstand. Zo wordt een romcom propaganda voor het systeem dat wil dat mensen in de pas blijven lopen en naar hun werk gaan. Hollywood doet alles om revolutie te voorkomen.
