Caesar.\">1<\/a><\/sup> gesorteerd te zijn op moreel gehalte, op schuld.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Violence begets violence&#8221; zegt het meest onschuldige personage, waarmee ze de hoogste wijsheid in deze film debiteert. Mildred (Francis McDormand), wiens dochter werd verkracht en vermoord, klaagt op billboards de politiechef van het stadje in Missouri aan, die zelf geen schuld draagt. Daarmee stelt ze een hele keten van misdaden in werking. Geen van de slachtoffers draagt schuld, en toch gaat het maar door want iedereen wil recht laten zegevieren. En zo stapelt schuld zich op schuld in deze comedy of errors.<\/p>\n<p>Wie draagt de meeste schuld? Er is een hoofdverdachte die onschuldig blijkt te zijn, maar die het wel graag zou hebben gedaan. De echte dader wordt nooit gevonden. De ultieme wraakexpeditie waar de twee grootste revanchisten elkaar ten slotte in vinden, eindigt in het ongewisse. Wel is er iemand die voor alle zonden boet en die in zijn afscheidsbrieven iedereen verlost van alle schuld: de politiechef.<\/p>\n<p>De moraal van het verhaal? &#8220;The buck stops here&#8221;, zoals van president Truman (geboren in Missouri) wordt geciteerd: ik ben niet schuldig, maar ik ben verantwoordelijk, en ik maak hier een einde aan. En zo eindigt de film waar hij begon: met schuld zonder consequentie.
